Nilgiris women's free bus travel scheme unclear, says consumer body
The Coonoor Consumer Protection Association has asked the Tamil Nadu government to clarify whether the free bus travel scheme for women applies in the Nilgiris, citing that most buses in the district run on express fares.
The Coonoor Consumer Protection Association has sought clarity from the Tamil Nadu government on whether the free bus travel scheme for women will be applicable in the Nilgiris. Association president S. Manogaran said that of the 367 buses in the district, only 167 are operated as ordinary-fare mofussil buses. The remaining 180 buses have been extended to the plains and charge express fares because they travel more than 80 km.
Under the previous government, only 110 mofussil buses operating within a distance of 35 km functioned as free-travel buses for women. The association noted that the recent government announcement states women can travel free even on express buses, but it is unclear whether this benefit will apply in the Nilgiris. The association also cited fare issues and service irregularities in the district.
