With undergraduate admissions closing on August 17, 983 seats remained vacant in six government arts and science colleges in Coimbatore district, according to data from the office of the Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Coimbatore region. The colleges in Coimbatore city, Puliyakulam, Thondamuthur, Valparai, Mettupalayam and Pollachi together offered 4,382 UG seats for the current academic year, of which 3,399 were filled, leaving 983 vacancies. As many as 35 students who cleared the Class 12 supplementary examination also joined these colleges.
Valparai college recorded the highest number of vacancies, with 304 of its 520 seats unfilled, while Pollachi college had the lowest, with 68 vacancies. CPM Valparai taluk secretary P Paramasivam said the Valparai college had seen low enrolment in recent years compared to other colleges in the district.
