The Periyar Science and Technology Centre, located on a 22-acre campus in Kotturpuram, functions under the state's higher education department and is considered Chennai's leading hub for science education and awareness. However, the facility has not undergone significant renovation in at least 15 years. Its campus features outdated landscaping and aging, yellowing buildings. The centre appears to lack sufficient funding to modernise, according to a report. A school teacher from Thiruvananthapuram accompanying students on a trip to Chennai was among visitors who observed the condition.
