Six arrested for poaching Sambar deer in the Nilgiris

The Forest Department arrested six people on Monday in connection with the poaching of a Sambar deer in the Kattabettu forest range in the Nilgiris forest division. Officials seized a deer hide, a country-made rifle and slaughtering knives from the suspects.
The accused were identified as B. Velu (36), R. Surya (32) and M. Manickam (36), all from Karamadai in Coimbatore, and R. Senthilkumar (45), V. Viswanathan (38) and R. Chinnadurai, from Udhagamandalam in the Nilgiris.
According to the Forest Department, they acted on information from local residents and tracked down the suspects the same day. A case was registered under the Wildlife Protection Act, and the six were arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
