Tamil Nadu announces new Tiruvallur jail complex, upgrades to prisons

Law Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly that a new district jail complex will be built in Tiruvallur district at a cost of ₹48.76 crore to accommodate 500 prisoners, aiming to reduce overcrowding at Puzhal Central Prison. An integrated mental health centre will be established at Vellore Central Prison at a cost of ₹3.63 crore. An Industrial Training Institute (ITI) will be set up at Chennai Central Prison–I with an allocation of ₹8 crore to improve prisoners' welfare and employability skills. Additionally, ₹21 crore has been allocated to renovate and upgrade kitchens in prisons.
