Chennai: A disagreement over inspections at Sivakasi firecracker units emerged in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday. DMK MLA Thangam Thennarasu and Minister S Keerthana, both representing Virudhunagar district constituencies, exchanged remarks on the issue.
Thennarasu said sudden inspections at firecracker units had disrupted production and caused distress among workers. Keerthana responded that inspections followed five fire accidents in cracker units and concluded by July 13. She said 177 non-compliant units were detected, and many have corrected their issues and been permitted to resume operations. She also accused the opposition of 'torturing' the government.
