Tamil Nadu CM to release Mettur dam water for delta irrigation from September 1
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will release water from Mettur dam on September 1 for 45 days to support irrigation and drinking water needs in the Cauvery delta region, despite inadequate monsoon rainfall.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will release water from Stanley Reservoir in Mettur, Salem district, for irrigation purposes in the Cauvery delta region starting September 1. Water Resources Minister N. Anand announced the decision, stating that water will be released for a period of 45 days. The move considers the state's drinking water requirements and irrigation needs of the delta, despite inadequate rainfall in the Cauvery basin during the southwest monsoon. It follows requests from farmers and the public. At the beginning of the 2026–27 water year, Mettur dam held 41.223 tmcft of water, and officials noted that adequate water was not received from reservoirs in Karnataka.
