Tamil Nadu Forest Minister R V Ranjithkumar informed the Assembly on Tuesday that the state government is considering paying Rs 10 lakh each to the families of three Tamils killed in a shootout by the Karnataka forest department on August 14. The minister said the proposal was under consideration and would be decided after detailed discussions with Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
The statement came in response to a special calling-attention motion on the incident. The minister said Karnataka's government has come forward to provide Rs 5 lakh in compensation, and its chief minister has promised a proper inquiry. A case has been filed against the forest officials involved.
During the discussion, DMK's Manoj Pandian called for a detailed judicial inquiry into the incident and asked what action the Tamil Nadu government has taken. AIADMK's general secretary Edappadi K P also spoke on the matter, though details of his remarks were not available in the report.
