Tamil Nadu drops Parandur airport project, citing farmland and livelihoods

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced in the Assembly on Monday that the government has abandoned the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur. He said the project would affect agricultural land and disrupt the livelihoods of farmers and residents, and that any future airport should be located where agricultural land and residential areas are minimally affected.

Vijay said Chennai needs a new airport because of rising passenger traffic, industrial development, and increasing cargo movement. The existing Meenambakkam airport, operated by the Airports Authority of India, currently has capacity to handle around 30 million passengers annually; its Terminal 3 is becoming operational, according to the announcement.

The decision drew a warning from the DMK about possible economic damage, as reported.
