Tamil Nadu drops Parandur airport project; land to be used for alternative projects

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to drop the ₹27,400 crore greenfield airport project at Parandur in Kancheepuram district. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced the decision on Monday, August 24, 2026. The following day, Industries Minister S. Keerthana told the state Assembly that alternative projects would be implemented using the acquired land.
The Parandur site, about 70 km from Chennai, had received Union Government clearance in August 2022. Since then, local villagers and farmers have protested against the project, citing possible displacement and environmental concerns, particularly the area's water resources.
The announcement has shifted attention to the fate of the land already acquired for the project. The government has not yet specified what the alternative projects will be.
