The Commissioner of Collegiate Education has sought an explanation from a Joint Director who sent a letter directing government college principals to prevent students from joining protests by certain political groups. The notice follows backlash from political parties and civil society.

Chennai: The Commissioner of Collegiate Education has issued a showcause notice to the Joint Director (Planning and Development) of the Directorate of Collegiate Education, seeking an explanation for sending a letter to principals of all government colleges. The letter directed them to take action to prevent students from participating in protests organised by Left parties and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
The letter followed a directive from the Special Secretary of Higher Education, which quoted minutes of a Law and Order meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary last month. It drew considerable backlash from the Left parties, a coalition partner of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in the state, as well as from civil society.
The showcause notice was issued on Friday, according to the Commissioner. The full contents of the notice and the Joint Director's response have not been disclosed.
