Tamil Nadu engineer rescued from captivity in Myanmar
A 24-year-old engineer from Tiruvarur district who was held captive by a gang in Myanmar for nearly two weeks has been rescued and repatriated. The gang had demanded Rs 6.25 lakh for his release.
M Mukeshwaran, a 24-year-old engineer from Moovanallur Vettikkadu in Tiruvarur district, was rescued and repatriated on Sunday after being held captive by a gang in Myanmar for nearly a fortnight.
According to police, Mukeshwaran had worked in Thailand for two years and returned home about a month ago. Earlier this month, he saw a job offer in Myanmar and applied through an agency. He went to Thailand on August 8, and from there agency members took him to a town in Myanmar on the Thailand border.
Mukeshwaran reportedly did not like the work environment and wanted to return to India, but the agency group refused to let him go and demanded Rs 6.25 lakh for his release. He then informed his family.
Police investigating the case found that an associate named Samalaram, living in Rajasthan, was involved in a hawala racket linked to the group holding Mukeshwaran. Through this contact, police established communication with the captors and secured Mukeshwaran's rescue and repatriation.
