Tamil Nadu government drops Parandur airport project, to seek alternative site
The Tamil Nadu government has scrapped the proposed second airport at Parandur, four years after it was announced. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay said in the State Assembly on August 24 that the government would look for an alternative site. Separately, the Airports Authority of India will build a new terminal at the existing Chennai airport.
The Tamil Nadu government has dropped the proposed second airport at Parandur, four years after the project was first announced. The project had been one of the most anticipated and controversial infrastructure plans for Chennai.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced the decision in the State Assembly on August 24, stating that the government would search for an alternative site for Chennai's second airport.
In a separate development, the Airports Authority of India will construct Terminal 5 in the northwestern area of the existing Chennai airport at Meenambakkam. The terminal will be accessible via an elevated corridor.
The existing airport currently handles 30 million passengers a year. Construction is also ongoing on Terminal 3, which will handle international flights along with Terminal 2.
