Environment Minister V K Rajeev told the Tamil Nadu Assembly that the state will not compromise on fisherfolk livelihoods while reviewing a proposal by Hindustan Oil Exploration Company Limited (HOECL) to drill four additional wells off the Cuddalore coast.

Tamil Nadu Environment and Climate Change Minister V K Rajeev told the state Assembly that the government will ensure there is "no compromise" on the livelihoods of fisherfolk as it examines a proposal by Hindustan Oil Exploration Company Limited (HOECL) to drill four additional development wells off the Cuddalore coast.
The minister was responding to a Calling Attention Motion moved by DMK MLA M Thamimun Ansari, CPI MLA T Ramachandran and CPM MLA K. Mariamuthu, who raised environmental concerns over HOECL's hydrocarbon operations in the sea off Parangipettai in Cuddalore district.
Rajeev said HOECL had drilled four development wells and one exploratory well at the field between 2007 and 2011 with clearance from the union government.
