Tamil Nadu info panel censures SHRC PIO over delayed RTI replies
The Tamil Nadu State Information Commission warned the State Human Rights Commission's public information officer for not replying to RTI queries within the stipulated 30-day deadline. Chief Information Commissioner Atulya Misra censured the officer while disposing of a 2024 petition.
The Tamil Nadu State Information Commission has censured the State Human Rights Commission's (SHRC) public information officer (PIO) for failing to comply with the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Chief Information Commissioner Atulya Misra, while disposing of a plea filed in 2024, said public authorities must furnish replies to petitions filed under Section 19(1) of the RTI Act within 30 days.
The petition was filed in June 2024 by M Dhanasekaran, a resident of Kancheepuram, seeking details of investigation officers and dates of investigation in connection with an SHRC case registered in 2019. After receiving no response, Dhanasekaran filed a first appeal in July 2024 and later a second appeal before the information panel.
The commission accepted the latest response from the SHRC but warned the PIO about the delay, noting that penalties may apply for non-compliance with RTI deadlines.
