ERODE: Handloom and Textile Minister M Vijay Balaji said on Saturday that the tender for procuring yarn to manufacture free dhotis and sarees for the Pongal festival has been finalised. Weavers involved in producing these items had complained that production was being delayed because yarn had not yet been released from government cooperative spinning mills.
While addressing reporters in Erode, the minister said the tender for the yarn procurement has been finalised. He also said about one tonne of yarn is being procured from private suppliers.
The state government has allocated Rs 300 crore, in the first phase, for the scheme.
