Tamil Nadu is focusing on renovating hydropower plants and adding battery storage to meet rising peak electricity demand, with a hydro generation target of 4,776 million units for 2026-27 and battery storage planned by 2027.
Tamil Nadu's energy department has outlined plans to improve the efficiency of existing hydropower projects and expand battery energy storage, aiming to strengthen grid reliability and reduce reliance on thermal power as electricity consumption and peak demand rise.
For 2026-27, Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) has set a hydro generation target of 4,776 million units, as fixed by the Central Electricity Authority. The state also plans to maintain the average availability of hydro stations at more than 80 percent.
TNGECL's hydro wing currently operates and maintains 47 hydro power stations with 107 machines. Battery energy storage systems are planned for rollout by 2027 to help manage peak demand.
