Tamil Nadu scraps Parandur airport project; land to be used for alternative projects
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister announced dropping the ₹27,400 crore Parandur greenfield airport project. The Industries Minister said acquired land will be used for alternative projects.
The Tamil Nadu government has decided to abandon the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur in Kancheepuram district, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced on Monday, August 24, 2026. The project, estimated at ₹27,400 crore, had been cleared by the Union government in August 2022.
Following the announcement, attention turned to the land already acquired for the project. On Tuesday, Industries Minister S. Keerthana told the state Assembly that alternative projects would be implemented using the acquired land, without specifying details.
The Parandur site, about 70 km from Chennai, had faced opposition from local villagers and farmers since its approval. Protesters cited potential displacement and environmental damage, noting that the area is rich in water resources.
