The Tamil Nadu government has announced annual energy storage targets, aiming to store 4% of total renewable energy generated in 2029-30, as per central guidelines. It plans to achieve 2,500 MWh of storage capacity by the end of 2027.

Tamil Nadu has set yearly energy storage targets, with a goal to store 4% of the total renewable energy generated in 2029-30, in line with guidelines issued by the union government. Electricity minister CTR Nirmal Kumar told the state Assembly on Friday that the state plans to achieve a total energy storage capacity of 2,500 MWh by the end of 2027.
Speaking during the discussion on demands for grants for the energy department, the minister said that integrating renewable energy into the grid requires frequent ramping up and down of conventional thermal generation, which creates operational challenges and additional stress on the grid. He noted that Energy Storage Systems (ESS) would allow the state to integrate renewable energy and manage fluctuations in power demand and supply.
