The Tamil Nadu Assembly's live telecast has raised questions about the effectiveness of expunging remarks in the age of social media. Opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin said expunged portions were being made into reels and circulated online. Speaker JCD Prabhakar assured the House such cases would be referred to the Privileges Committee.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly's decision to telecast its proceedings live has been described as a step towards transparency, but it has also highlighted a dilemma: whether expunging remarks remains effective when social media can spread them quickly.
On Friday, Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin pointed out that despite the Speaker expunging remarks, portions of those remarks were being converted into "reels" and circulated online. In response, Speaker JCD Prabhakar assured the House that any circulation of expunged remarks or videos brought to his notice would be referred to the Privileges Committee.
The episode underscores a limitation: while the Speaker's ruling determines the official record, it cannot easily erase something already in the public domain. The Parliament, too, has faced similar challenges with television channels re-telecasting portions of proceedings after they have been expunged.
