Tamil Nadu to colour-code school buildings by safety level
Tamil Nadu's public works department will label government school buildings red, yellow, or green based on structural stability, minister Aadhav Arjuna told the state assembly. Red buildings must not be used, yellow indicates medium stability, and green marks stable buildings. A centralised dashboard is planned, and a joint survey with the school education department is expected to report in two months. Upgrades worth ₹727.58 crore, including CCTV, are also planned.
The Tamil Nadu public works department (PWD) will classify government school buildings by structural stability and mark them with colour-coded stickers, minister Aadhav Arjuna said in the state assembly on Monday. Red stickers will mark unstable buildings that school administrations must not use; yellow will indicate medium-level stability; green will mark stable buildings. The PWD is creating a centralised dashboard for this classification.
Aadhav said the PWD and the school education department are conducting a joint survey of government school buildings and expect a report in two months. He added that several government schools for girls lack adequate toilets and that maintenance has not been up to standard. The department has also planned upgrades worth ₹727.58 crore, including installation of CCTV.
