Tamil Nadu will exempt MSMEs installing rooftop solar systems from electricity tax for five years under the Vetri Solar Mission, aiming to boost renewable energy adoption.

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to provide a 100% exemption from electricity tax to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that install rooftop solar power systems at their establishments. The benefit will apply for five years under the Vetri Solar Mission, and the energy department is expected to issue a notification to implement the measure.
According to an official, the central and state governments already provide subsidies of up to Rs 1 lakh to domestic consumers who install rooftop solar systems. The state government has now extended support to MSMEs through the electricity tax exemption.
Tamil Nadu has around 45 lakh MSMEs, many of which have reportedly sought incentives to install rooftop solar systems. The move is intended to encourage industries to adopt renewable energy and increase rooftop solar generation across the state.
