The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Collegiate Education withdrew a circular that asked college principals to prevent students from joining protests organized by Left parties and the Tamil Nadu Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), following opposition from political parties and student organizations.
The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE) issued a circular on August 17 directing government arts and science college principals to take action to prevent students from participating in protests and agitations organized by Left parties and the Tamil Nadu Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). The circular also asked principals to submit details of the action taken to the DCE.
A day later, the DCE withdrew the circular without citing a reason, after the directive faced strong opposition from political parties and student organizations and was widely shared on social media.
The report also noted that minutes of an official meeting recorded the chief secretary calling for inter-departmental coordination to prevent students and youth from participating in protests and agitations.
