AISHE 2023-24 data shows Tamil Nadu's overall higher education enrolment is high, but the gender parity index for Scheduled Tribe students is the lowest in the country at 0.80.

According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023-24, Tamil Nadu has a Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of 52.3, making it a national leader in higher education. However, the data reveals a significant gap for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community. The ST male GER in the state is 47.6, while the ST female GER is 38.2. This results in a Gender Parity Index (GPI) of 0.80, meaning there are only 80 tribal women for every 100 tribal men enrolled in colleges. The report identifies this as the lowest tribal GPI in the country, highlighting a disparity that contrasts with the state's overall high enrolment and its pattern of women outnumbering men in higher education.
