TN Farmers Urge Relocation of Elephant Rejuvenation Camp
Farmers from Thekkampatti and Nellithurai panchayats in Tamil Nadu have urged the government to relocate a proposed elephant rejuvenation camp, saying the site lies on a traditional wild elephant migration corridor and watering point. The state government recently announced ₹3 crore to revive the camp, which has not been held for five years.
Farmers in Thekkampatti village of Mettupalayam have asked the Tamil Nadu government to shift a proposed elephant rejuvenation camp to another location, claiming it could worsen wild elephant intrusions into their drought-affected farmlands.
The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister announced in the state Assembly that ₹3 crore has been allocated to revive the camp on the banks of the Bhavani River at Thekkampatti. The camp has not been conducted for the past five years.
Local farmers from Thekkampatti and Nellithurai panchayats say the site lies on a traditional wild elephant migration corridor and is a regular watering point. They said blocking these paths will force wild elephants into nearby villages such as Thekkampatti, Dasanur, NG Pudur, RG Pudur, Thottadasanur, and Nellithurai.
