Tamil Nadu will increase annual health insurance coverage under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 25 lakh per family, a fivefold rise affecting 1.45 crore families. The expansion also adds transgender medical and surgical services at seven government medical college hospitals.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced in the state assembly on Wednesday that the annual health insurance cover under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme will be raised from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 25 lakh per family. Officials said the fivefold increase will benefit 1.45 crore families across the state.
The announcement also extended transgender medical and surgical services to seven government medical college hospitals, including Stanley Medical College in Chennai and hospitals attached to medical colleges in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Chengalpet, Thiruvarur, Dharmapuri and Kanyakumari.
The existing scheme already covers high-cost procedures such as cochlear implants and organ transplants, according to the assembly announcement.
