TN minister: Mining flattened 10 ancient hills and hillocks
Natural Resources Minister T K Prabhu told the Assembly that indiscriminate mining and illegal quarrying for m-sand and construction aggregates have flattened around 10 hills and hillocks, most nearly 320 crore years old.
Tamil Nadu Natural Resources Minister T K Prabhu informed the Assembly on Tuesday that indiscriminate mining and illegal quarrying for m-sand and other construction aggregates have flattened around 10 hills and hillocks across the state, most of which are nearly 320 crore years old.
Speaking during the discussion on his department's demands for grants, Prabhu said the vanished hills were ancient geological formations that existed even before the emergence of humans. He added that increasing dependence on m-sand had contributed to the destruction. "We have all searched for missing persons at some point in our lives. We may have to search for the hills that have disappeared from our state," he said.
According to the minister, three of the affected hills are in Perambalur district, two each in Madurai and Coimbatore districts, and one in Tirupattur district. The available report did not provide the full district-wise breakdown for the remaining hills.
