Tamil Nadu's transport department has withdrawn the requirement for RTOs and vehicle inspectors to verify reflective tape fitment certificates online. Vehicle owners no longer need to install new reflective tapes for a Fitness Certificate if existing tapes are in good condition.

The Tamil Nadu transport department has eased rules for commercial vehicle owners. According to an official circular dated August 18 issued by Transport and Road Safety Commissioner Sigy Thomas Vaidhyan, the mandate requiring Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) and Motor Vehicle Inspectors to verify reflective tape fitment certificates through an online portal has been withdrawn.
The dedicated verification website (rtvsta.tn.gov.in) is being decommissioned, and officials have been directed to stop insisting on online certificate verification. As per norms, all commercial vehicles, including private buses, must have reflective tape installed as a safety measure. With the new directive, vehicle owners are no longer required to install new retro-reflective tapes every time they apply for a Fitness Certificate (FC), provided the existing tapes are in good condition.
