Permanent staff at Tiruchy Corporation has dropped from 1,220 in 2019 to 720, with 500 retirements over seven years. Workers are urging the corporation to fill vacant posts, saying contractual workers have not taken over their duties.

TIRUCHY: The Tiruchy Corporation's permanent workforce has steadily declined, leaving existing staff with a heavier workload. According to corporation sources, the number of permanent workers fell from 1,220 in 2019 to 720, as 500 employees retired over the past seven years. Another 30 workers are set to retire in the next six months.
Permanent workers are mainly involved in cleaning roads, clearing stormwater drains, and carrying out special sanitation drives in all wards. While the corporation engaged 1,800 contractual workers through outsourcing agencies in 2023, these workers do not take over the duties performed by regular staff, according to sources. As a result, permanent workers say they face mounting workload and often work beyond duty hours.
The permanent workers have urged the corporation to fill vacant posts and ensure adequate manpower in all wards to reduce the burden.
