TWAD Board's power bill dues in Madurai reach Rs 58 crore

The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board's pending electricity bills with the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) in Madurai have accumulated to Rs 58.36 crore over the past five years (2019-26), according to TNPDCL officials. This amount includes Rs 19 crore owed by the BPSC (likely a department or division within TWAD).
A TNPDCL official said the mounting dues are straining the corporation's finances. TWAD has the largest pending power bills among all government agencies in the Madurai division, with more than 160 service connections in the city and rural areas.
TWAD, the public water supplier, cited unpaid water bills amounting to Rs 40 crore by civic bodies in Madurai district as the reason for its liquidity squeeze. The official also noted that TWAD owed Rs 5.15 crore to TNPDCL's Madurai Metro division, while another Rs 54.51 crore remained unsettled. The dues have been building up over five years, and TNPDCL says the burden on its finances is increasing daily.
