The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board has accumulated power bill arrears of Rs 58.36 crore with the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) over the past five years (2019-26), according to TNPDCL officials. The BPSC accounts for Rs 19 crore of the current dues. TWAD has more than 160 service connections in Madurai city and rural areas, and its monthly dues are mounting, an official said. TWAD is the largest defaulter among government agencies in TNPDCL's Madurai division. TWAD owes Rs 5.15 crore to TNPDCL's Madurai Metro division, with the remaining Rs 54.51 crore outstanding in other divisions. TWAD officials said unpaid water bills of about Rs 40 crore by civic bodies in Madurai district have created a liquidity squeeze.
