Woman dies of snakebite in Vellore; villagers seek PHC
A 36-year-old tribal woman from Anaicut died at a Vellore hospital after a snakebite. Police registered an unnatural death case; villagers have demanded a primary health centre.
Chinnathai C, a 36-year-old woman from the Malayali tribal community in Jarthankollai in Anaicut, died on August 21 at the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital (GVMCH). She had been admitted on August 17 after being bitten by a snake the previous night.
According to Veppankuppam police, who registered a case of unnatural death, Chinnathai and her husband were sleeping at their home on the night of August 16 when the snake bit her. The couple initially assumed it was an insect bite and sought medical help only the next day from a team from Christian Medical College (CMC) hospital that was visiting the hills. The team took her to a base hospital, after which she was admitted to GVMCH.
She did not respond to treatment and died. An autopsy was conducted, and her body was handed over to her family on Saturday. Following the incident, villagers have demanded a primary health centre (PHC) in the area.
