At least 14 newborn babies died after a fire broke out in the neonatal nursery of the gynaecology ward at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Wednesday morning, according to rescue officials and local media. The fire occurred on the third floor of the Mother and Child Hospital ward, reports said. Islamabad's Chief Commissioner said an emergency fire call was made just before 7 a.m. local time, and rescue teams brought the fire under control. The cause was reportedly an air-conditioner compressor explosion inside the nursery, but investigations are ongoing. A PIMS spokesperson said 15 babies were in the ward and at least one was saved by a doctor. Authorities dispatched six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances to the scene.
