Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Thursday (August 27, 2026) that 34 Australians are missing following flash flooding through the Nepal-Tibet border region. He noted that Nepal, as a developing country, lacks the resources to handle such an event as Australia would, making information difficult to obtain.

"Our thoughts are with all those who will be concerned about their loved ones today," he told a panel discussion.

The Australians are among hundreds of people missing in the floods and landslides, which have killed at least 160 people. The death toll appeared likely to rise.

Australia's foreign ministry said it was aware of a number of Australians in the area. India's Ministry of Home Affairs has also been closely monitoring the flood situation in Nepal, with water levels in reservoirs on the Nepal side receding, according to a separate report.
