A flash flood in Nepal's Bhotekoshi River, triggered by a rock-ice avalanche, has killed more than 600 people and left close to 2,500 missing, including foreign nationals, mostly from India. The flood devastated towns including Betrawati in neighbouring Nuwakot district.
A devastating flash flood hit the Bhotekoshi River in Nepal's Rasuwa district, near the Tibet border, at around 8:40 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The flood was triggered by a rock-ice avalanche, according to reports. More than 600 people have died and close to 2,500 remain missing, including foreign nationals, mostly from India.
The flood also devastated towns in the surrounding area. Ramesh Kumar, a journalist based in Kathmandu, reached Betrawati in Nuwakot district, where he was born and raised. He posted a photograph of a clock tower with its hands stopped at 09.29, writing, "A clock that would never show the time again." He described the town's destruction, saying, "Will Betrawati ever revive as a bazaar again? Almost impossible."
