Gang attack in Haiti kills 47, kidnaps more than 50, UN says
A gang attack on a community near Haiti's capital killed at least 47 people and abducted more than 50, the United Nations said. The gang leader has threatened to kill the hostages if authorities target gang members during a rescue.
Armed men attacked the community of Kenscoff, in the hills above Port-au-Prince, on Sunday, killing at least 47 people and kidnapping more than 50, according to the United Nations. The UN reported the figures on Tuesday.
Officials described the incident as one of the largest mass kidnappings in Haiti in recent years. A gang leader has threatened to kill the hostages if authorities kill any gang members while attempting to secure the area.
The attack has challenged the belief that security in the Caribbean country was improving. Romain Le Cour, head of the Haiti Observatory at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, called the attack "a major political and security test, for the government, for the police and for the international mission."
