Three activists convicted of inciting subversion under a Beijing-imposed national security law received prison terms ranging from 5 years and 2 months to 7 years and 3 months.

A Hong Kong court on Friday sentenced three activists who for years organized vigils in remembrance of China’s 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown to prison terms ranging from 5 years and 2 months to 7 years and 3 months, in a national security case.
Lee Cheuk-yan and Chow Hang-tung, who pleaded not guilty, received sentences of 7 years and 7 years and 3 months, respectively. Albert Ho was sentenced to 5 years and 2 months, a lower term attributed partly to his guilty plea. All three were convicted earlier this year of inciting subversion under a Beijing-imposed national security law.
The three defendants were charged in September 2021 and had been held in custody for years. The case is widely seen as a barometer of Hong Kong’s freedoms as Beijing clamps down on dissent. The source also noted that Hong Kong once had a vibrant civil society.
