Hundreds missing after Nepal-Tibet flash floods; Infosys executive among unaccounted
Flash floods triggered by an ice-and-rock avalanche in the Nepal-Tibet border region have left thousands missing, including Indian nationals. An Infosys executive is among those unaccounted for, and authorities are racing to locate survivors.
A major disaster on the Nepal-Tibet border has left thousands missing after flash floods struck with extraordinary speed. The floods were triggered by an ice-and-rock avalanche in the Himalayan region that sent a surge of water, mud, and debris downstream.
India's Ministry of External Affairs said 320 Indian nationals remained missing or uncontactable, while around 400 others were stranded on the Chinese side of the border. Thousands of people are missing across Nepal and Tibet overall.
Among those still unreachable is Lax Gopisetty, chief of Infosys Public Services, who was visiting Nepal in a personal capacity, according to reports. Infosys said it is working with authorities to establish contact with him and is supporting his family.
Rescue operations are underway to find survivors, though the scale of the disaster has made the search challenging.
