Hurricane Lowell hit Hawaii's western islands, causing widespread power outages on Kauai and destroying a stretch of coastal road. Dangerous surf from the remnants of Hurricane Marie also affected the Southern California coast.

Hurricane Lowell brought damaging winds and heavy rains to Hawaii's western islands on Tuesday, knocking out power to thousands and damaging beachside roads. On the island of Kauai, home to about 73,000 residents, the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative reported that nearly all of its roughly 35,000 members were without power early Tuesday. Emergency officials asked residents to conserve water and stay off roads while authorities assessed the damage. Waves crashing onto Kauai's southern coast tore apart a road and pushed piles of sand and lava rocks into a beachside park, said Rochelle Ballard, a former professional surfer. Separately, dangerous surf conditions caused by the remnants of Hurricane Marie were expected to persist along the Southern California coast for several days.
