A mudslide hit the Gyirong Port land crossing between China and Nepal in Tibet's Gyirong County on August 26, causing major casualties and missing people, according to the state news agency Xinhua. The mudslide occurred on the Nepalese side at around 10:30 AM local time (0230 GMT). Xinhua reported that roads leading to the crossing on the Chinese side, along with communications and power supplies, were cut off, and search and rescue work was underway. In response, President Xi Jinping called for all-out efforts to search for the missing and urged stronger monitoring and early warning systems to prevent secondary disasters.
