Nepal's foreign ministry says reconstruction after deadly glacial-collapse floods will require about $4.78 billion, most of it long term, as the country seeks international support. More than 1,400 people were killed and about 5,600 are missing.

Nepal's foreign ministry said on Friday that the reconstruction bill after deadly floods triggered by a glacial mountain collapse would amount to about $4.78 billion. The tsunami-like surge of water, mud and debris on August 26 began on the China-Nepal border, killing more than 1,400 people and leaving some 5,600 missing.
Foreign ministry spokesman Lok Bahadur Chhetri told reporters that the total estimated reconstruction requirement was approximately $4.78 billion. Of that, about $57.67 million is estimated to be needed for short-term reconstruction and recovery over the next six months, while about $4.71 billion is required for longer-term reconstruction.
Nepal's leaders say the Himalayan country needs long-term international support.
