Nepal flash floods kill 160, hundreds missing, including 133 Indians
Flash floods and landslides in central Nepal near the Tibet border have killed at least 160 people and left hundreds, including 133 Indian nationals, missing. India has sent 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid, and the US has announced $500,000 in emergency assistance.
A massive flash flood swept through central Nepal districts bordering Tibet on Wednesday, causing widespread devastation along the Bhote Koshi River. Officials said at least 160 people have died, and more than 750 people are missing, including 133 Indian nationals. The floods and landslides caused extensive damage to settlements and at least a dozen hydropower projects.
Rescue teams continued searching through mud and debris for survivors on Thursday. India sent 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid and essential medicines as a first tranche of assistance. The United States announced $500,000 in emergency assistance. Indian states Bihar and Uttar Pradesh were put on high alert.
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu issued emergency contact numbers for Indian nationals affected by the floods: +977 985 131 6807 and +977 970 910 7500. The Nepal Tourism Board also issued a toll-free emergency number 1234, a hotline 1144, and tourist police number 9851289445 for those needing help.
