Nepal's finance minister estimates the country may need $4–5 billion to rebuild after devastating floods triggered by a glacier collapse killed more than 600 people and left thousands missing.
Nepal may need between $4 billion and $5 billion to rebuild from this week's devastating floods, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle told Reuters on Saturday, as authorities continued assessing the damage. Wagle said the figure was an initial estimate and that the final loss and damage assessment was still underway. He noted the reconstruction bill would likely be much less than what was needed after the 2015 earthquake, but would still amount to nearly a tenth of Nepal's economy. The disaster was caused by a glacier collapse on Wednesday that unleashed a massive torrent of rock, ice, mud and debris through Himalayan river systems, killing more than 600 people in Nepal and China's Tibet region. More than 2,000 people remained unaccounted for. The floodwaters leveled towns in the border area.
