Brent crude rose above $100 a barrel for the first time in nearly six weeks after fresh attacks on oil infrastructure and tankers in the Middle East intensified supply concerns.
Brent crude crossed $100 a barrel on Wednesday, rising 2.57% to $100.40, while US West Texas Intermediate climbed 2.10% to $94.98. The move marked the first time in almost six weeks that oil has reached triple digits.
The surge followed a sharp deterioration in regional conflict. The US military said it struck five Iranian tankers after what it described as attempted missile attacks on a Navy warship. Separately, attacks by an Iranian-backed Houthi rebel group set oil facilities in Saudi Arabia on fire, adding to an oil market already on an upward trajectory.
