Russia strikes nine Ukrainian cities in missile and drone barrage
Russia launched missile and drone strikes on nine Ukrainian cities, causing civilian casualties and targeting military and industrial sites. The attacks continued into daylight, with explosions reported in Kyiv. Ukraine says its air defenses are strained by shortages of Patriot missiles and repeated Russian barrages.
Russia bombarded cities across Ukraine with missiles and drones in an overnight onslaught that carried into daylight hours on Thursday, with explosions echoing around Kyiv through the morning. The Russian Defence Ministry described the strikes as 'massive.' Ukrainian officials reported civilian casualties and said military and industrial sites were among the targets. Ukraine is short of U.S.-made Patriot air defense missiles that can counter Russia's ballistic missiles, and Moscow's fast-flying jet-powered drones have added to the challenge. Ukrainian officials say Russia builds up missile stocks and launches major attacks every few days, seeking to exhaust Ukrainian defenses through sheer weight of numbers. In response, Ukraine has hit high-profile targets on Russian soil, as the two countries inflict mutual destruction.
