Six Indians among crew of cargo ship hijacked off Somalia
Pirates seized a Cameroon-flagged cargo ship off Somalia's Puntland coast, and six Indians were among its 10 crew, a Somali official said. The vessel was carrying weapons destined for a Turkish military facility in Mogadishu.
On August 17, 2026, pirates seized the M/V LUTUF, a Cameroon-flagged cargo ship, approximately 3.5 nautical miles off Marraya in Puntland's Eyl district, according to a Somali official who spoke on condition of anonymity. The vessel was then taken toward the Nugaal coast. The ship, owned by Polar Movement Shipping, was carrying weapons bound for a Turkish military training facility in Mogadishu, along with communications and satellite equipment, the official said. The 10-member crew included six Indians. The Somali official confirmed the hijacking and crew details on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
