South Korea scrambles jets after Russian aircraft enter air defence zone
South Korea said it scrambled fighter jets after multiple Russian military aircraft entered its air defence identification zone over the East Sea, without violating its airspace. It was the second such incident in weeks.
South Korea's defence ministry said on Wednesday that multiple Russian aircraft had entered and then left its air defence identification zone over the East Sea, also called the Sea of Japan. The ministry said the aircraft were detected before they entered the zone and that Air Force fighter jets were deployed to prepare for any contingency. It said the Russian aircraft did not violate South Korean airspace. The incident was the second of its kind in weeks. Ties between South Korea and Russia have deteriorated since Seoul joined Western sanctions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and as Moscow has built closer ties with North Korea.
