Sri Lanka's meteorological department says the current El Nino is expected to have its strongest impact in the first quarter of 2027, with above-normal rainfall forecast for late 2026 and dry spells also possible.
Sri Lanka is preparing for the effects of the current El Nino, which a senior meteorological official says is expected to have its strongest impact on the island in the first quarter of next year. According to Ajith Wijemanne, director general of Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology, above-normal rainfall is expected in October and November, with wet conditions likely to continue through December and into early January. While parts of the country are currently experiencing dry spells, Wijemanne said El Nino does not simply mean dry conditions, and Sri Lanka could experience both dry spells and periods of heavy rain.
