A Damascus court sentenced Ahmad Badreddine Hassoun, Syria's former grand mufti, to life in prison for inciting violence and justifying murder during Bashar Assad's rule.
A court in Damascus has sentenced Ahmad Badreddine Hassoun, Syria's former grand mufti, to life in prison. The Fourth Criminal Court, headed by Judge Fakhreddine al-Aryan, convicted Hassoun of inciting violence and justifying murder. Hassoun, a loyalist of former President Bashar Assad, served as mufti from 2005 to 2021, when the position was abolished. The court said the official religious establishment under Assad's rule had justified the use of barrel bombs that targeted civilian areas and caused widespread destruction. The verdict is the latest in Syrian court proceedings against officials affiliated with the former government.
