Typhoon Saudel struck Okinawa and other remote Japanese islands on Wednesday, causing minor injuries, blackouts, and flight cancellations, before moving west toward China.
Typhoon Saudel hit Japan's southwestern remote islands on Wednesday, injuring two people and causing blackouts and flight cancellations before heading west over the East China Sea toward China's eastern coast. As of late Wednesday morning, the storm was about 180 kilometers northwest of Okinoerabu Island, packing winds of up to 144 kilometers per hour, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Two people sustained minor injuries, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency and prefectural officials said. A 78-year-old woman in Uruma, Okinawa, suffered a head injury when strong winds blew her to the ground outside her home. Another injury was reported on nearby Amamioshima island. Authorities warned of possible landslides as the storm continued its westward track.
